Stony Mountain Ski Area to Remain Closed for the 2022-2023 season

Dewar Family reviewing next steps as they plan for retirement

Stony Mountain Ski Area will not open this Winter Season as owners Gary & Heather Dewar plan for their retirement.  “As a family we reviewed our operations, logistics and capacity to re-open this winter after 2 years of COVID 19” said Heather. “We made the difficult decision to retire and look forward to the next generation of ownership for Stony Mountain Ski Area. Gary and Heather are planning their retirement and daughter Camryn is pursuing a career in Opera and is currently taking her Masters in Music (Vocal Performance) at Montclair State university in New Jersey.

Stony Mountain Ski Area was started in 1967 by 4 partners from Winnipeg.  The Dewar’s purchased the property in 1988.

The Dewar’s are proud of the legacy that their ownership will leave behind.  They were the first ski area in Manitoba to embrace the sport of snowboarding in 1988.  Snowmaking upgrades allowed them to be the first Manitoba ski area to open every season they were operational. They developed a comprehensive snowschool and offered lessons for all ages and skill levels.

Thousands of people have learned to ski/snowboard at Stony Mountain Ski Area on the prairies and many Stony customers have gone on to have careers in the Ski Industry around the world.

The Dewars have loved to have grown up with families for almost 3 generations.

As the Dewar’s plan their next steps as a family they will be listing the ski area for sale.  It is their hope and intention for it to remain a ski area.

“Our goal is that the next owners maintain the area as a ski and snowboard facility and take it to the next level, “ said Heather & Gary.

The Dewar Family live onsite at Stony Mountain Ski Area and both Gary and Heather are lifelong residents of the Interlake.  Over the years the Dewars have made many changes to Stony Mountain Ski Area.  They added runs, a terrain park, upgraded the snowmaking and grooming system, expanded the Day Lodge, rental system, lights and lifts.

“This was the greatest place for our daughter Camryn to grow up.”  We look forward to the next phase of our lives and Stony Mountain Ski Area’s,” said the Dewar Family.
